1976 - He broke with the conceptual works and returned to painting. Slo Show at Gallery Luiz Buarque de Holanda & Paulo Bittencourt, in Rio. “I’ve been feeling the need to return to painting for a long time. Something basically visceral that made me do monochromatic paintings, with a strong connection to the drawings, which are a link with previous works” said the artist in an interview for “Jornal do Brasil” (a newspaper in Rio). The works were based on four colors. “Yellow, blue, red and green, all strong, noble and with character” he said in the same interview, published in October 1st, 1976. The conceptual works set internationally in Art System II in Latin America, Lousiania Museum, Copenhagen; Seventies, at MAM-SP, 5th International Video Meeting at Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Caracas, Venezuela; 18 Latin America Artists, at Gallery Art Core, in Kyoto, Japan; Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection 60 / 70, in Brasília, Recife, Salvador and São Paulo.


1984 - Angelo, Gilberto Chateaubriand, Jô Soares, Adriano de Aquino

1977 - Small Retrospective of conceptual works at MAC, in São Paulo. Solo Show of paintings at Museu de Arte da Bahia, in Salvador, with introduction by Frederico Moraes. First show of the book “Identidade do Artista” (Identity of the Artist) at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. The artist decides not to participate of Group Exhibitions for a long time.

1978 - Solo Show of drawings at gabinete Arte Global, in São Paulo, with introduction by Frederico Moraes. “A Terra é Azul” Exhibition of paintings at Petite Galerie, in Rio.

1979 - He dedicated himsef to the serigraphs album Reflection produced by Gilberto Chateaubriand - GBM Editora de Arte, with text by José Carlos de Oliveira. The result was shown at GB Galeria de Arte and the Gabinete de Artes Gráficas, in São Paulo. Divorced his second wife, Vera Bocayuva.

1981 - First exhibition of the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection at MAM in Rio de Janeiro.

1982 - “My paintings starts to show a figuration oulining” says the artist. The result is shown at IBEU Gallery, text by Frederico Moraes. Exhibition of the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection at the Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon. He spent three months travelling in the United States and Europe.

1983 - Exhibition of watercolors at Gallery Museum, in Rio de Janeiro. “The imaginary landscape show up with elements that are more dense, phallic” he said. Atelier at Dias Ferreira St., in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro.

1984 - Paintings at MP2 Arte, Birth of Rex’s image. Group Exhibition Hooray to painting, paying a homage to Iberê Camargo at Petite Gallerie.

1985 - First Rex Exhibition, at the opening of Galeria Subsdistrito Comercial de Arte, in São Paulo. Watercolors at Galeria Suzana Sasson, in São Paulo and at Galeria Paulo Klabin, in Rio de Janeiro. Group Exhibition of drawings Old Habits at Parque Lage and Opinion 65 - 20 years, at Galeria Banerj.


1985 - Meeting in José Otávio Montesanti´s home: standing, a esquerda Fred Sutter, Roberto Moriconi, Rubens Gerchman, Cleber Machado, Jorge Guinle, Gregório Gruber, Gilberto Chateaubriand, Gilles Jacquard e Claude Amaral Peixoto. Seated, Betty Jacquard, José Otávio Montesanti, Angelo de Aquino e Aloisio Queiros.

1986 - “It was the beginning of a Rio / Paris shuttle service”, said the artist. Solo Shows at Galleries Sculpture, in Paris; Arte-Espaço in Rio and un Jour, un Peintre, Solo Show at FIAC, for Gallery 1900-2000, in Paris. The Americans paintings and sculpture of Latin American artists, at Artecurial, in Paris. He had an atelier at rue Mouchez.

1987 - Solo Shows at galeria Montesanti, in Rio and in São Paulo. He took part in Hallucinated Gesture, Exhibition organized by Roberto Moriconi at the Rio Design Center, in Rio and Museu da Imagem e do Som, in São Paulo.

1988 - He organized with marchands Montesanti and Fleiss, the Exhibition São Paulo - Rio - Paris, at Galleria Montesanti 1900-2000 with paticipation of Roberto Magalhães, Siron, Tozzi and Antonio Henrique do Amaral. Solo Shows of watercolor at GB Galeria de Arte and paintings at Galeria Ipanema. In Paris, he moved to Rue Cassete. Took part in Exhibitions Bridge 21, organized by Roberto Moriconi and Hedonismos, of the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, with Wilson Coutinho as curator. He started living together with Cristina Aragão.

1989 - Solo Show at Galerie de Poche 1900-2000, in Paris. He moved to rue de Sévres. Exhibition Hooray Brazil, at Gallery 1900-2000. Took part at the Frankfurt Art Fair and at Art Jonction Internationale, in Nice; Pathways, at Rio Design Center, with Roberto Moriconi as curator. Hooray Brazil at Ruta Correa Gallery, in Freiburg. He was the only Brazilian present at the 1st Biennial of Young Painters. Bicentennial of the French Revolution, in Cannes. Eduarda Aragão de Aquino is born.

1990 - Solo Show at Galeria Ipanema. The artist was at the opening of Galeria Flack, in Paris. he moved to the Rue Pote-au-Fer. Exhibitions Aspeck Latein Amerikanische Kunster, at Ruta Correa Gallery, in Freiburg. Rex image was used for cover of French Art Magazine “Artension”.

1991 - He took part in the Exhibitions Six Latin American Artists, at Galerie 1900-2000; Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection at MAM, in Rio de Janeiro; Frankfurt Art Fair; Aspeck Latein
Amerikanische Kunster, Worforum, Dotterhouse, in Germany.

1992 - Solo Show at Galerie 1900-2000. Atelier at Rue Nicole, in Paris. Solo Show at Galeria Ipanema. Exhibitions Eco-Art at MAM, in Rio; Latin American Diversity and Artist’s Tapestry (tapestries made in France with international artists), at Galerie 1900-2000. He was hired by Agência Cosmo Merchandising, who markets Rex’s image in Japan.

1993 - Still Life, Group Exhibition at Galerie Gloria Cohen, Paris. On the way to Niteroi, João Satamini Collection, at Paço Imperial; Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, at MAM in Rio. 1st Triennial of the Americas, a selection of artists of the Americas working in France since World War II, in Maubeuge, north of France.

1994 - Portraits and Self-Portraits in the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, at MAM, in Rio. Exhibition celebrating Rex’s Ten Years at the CCBB, in Rio: Rex is Ten, text by Wilson Coutinho.

1995 - Opinion 65 - 30 Years Cristina Aragão and Wilson Coutinho as curator. Exhibition with Rubem Gerchman at Bolsa de Arte, in Porto Alegre and Galeria 999, in Rio. He broke up with Cristina Aragão.

1996 - Group Exhibition Rio’s Color at Espaço Cultural dos Correios. The Artist and the Collector, Solo Exhibition of works of the artist in the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio.

1997 - Solo Show at Gallery Forma, in Rio; 70 years of Art em Santa Teresa, at Centro Cultural Laurinda Santos Lobo; Group Exhibiton The History of a Face at Galerie 1900-2000. 1954-1988 A Vision of the Brazilian Art at Petite Galerie, Paco Imperial in Rio. “Vida Rex” was published.

1998 - Individual exhibition at Bentley College Art Gallery, Waltham, Massachusetts, USA, and at Galeria Toulose, Rio de Janeiro. Participation at Paris Futebol e Arte exhibition at Shopping Fashion Mall, Rio de Janeiro.

1999 - Participation at the collective exhibitions: Viva Brasil, Galerie 1900-2000, Paris and United Artists 5: Viagens e Identidades, at Casa das Rosas, São Paulo.

2000 - Individual exhibition at GB - Gravura Brasileira Ltda., Rio de Janeiro. Participation at the collective exhibitions: IBEU 60 anos de Arte, at Galeria IBEU, Rio de Janeiro, and Situações Arte Brasileira Anos 70, at Casa França Brasil, Rio de Janeiro.

2001 - Coordinates the Via Aérea collective Exhibition, at Galeria GB Arte, Rio de Janeiro. Among the guest artist: Rubens Gerchman, Roberto Magalhães, Ivald Granato and Cláudio Tozzi.

2002 - Individual exhibition at Galeria Marcia Barrozo do Amaral, Rio de Janeiro. Participation at the collective exhibitions: Projeto Arte em Campo Coca Cola Copa do mundo 2002, at Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal, Rio de Janeiro and Caminho do Contemporâneo 1952-2002, at Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro.

2003 - Participation at Arte em Movimento collective exhibition, at BNDES, Rio de Janeiro.

2004 - The artist celebrates 40 years of painting and 20 years of Rex with individual exhibition 20/40, at Casa França - Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, and with another individual exhibition Rio - Milão - Rio Anos 70, at Galeria Marcia Barrozo do Amaral. He also takes part in the Palmo Quadrado collective exhibition at Centro Cultural Alumni, São Paulo. The same exhibition was presented at Museum of Latin America, at Palm Beach, California at Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, and at University Art Gallery, Sonoma State University, California.

2005 - One dog and two artists - Rex jewel, joint work with the designer Antônio Bernardo. Galeria Antônio Bernardo - Rio de Janeiro.
